Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 26, 2026
1. Introduction
LunarLog is a private moon journal for iOS, developed by Bryan Stober. This Privacy Policy explains what information LunarLog may collect or process, how it is used, and the choices available to you.
By using LunarLog, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
2. What LunarLog Is
LunarLog helps you track lunar phases, keep a personal journal, and discover patterns across phases, places, moods, and time. Most of your data is stored locally on your device.
3. Information You May Provide
LunarLog may process the following information, depending on how you use the app:
- Journal entries — text you write in the app
- Mood and reflection data — selections and generated summaries related to your entries
- Display name and profile info — optional preferences you set in the app
- Location — optional, if you grant location permission, for moon timing and map-based memories
- HealthKit data — optional, if you grant Health access (e.g., steps, heart rate, sleep)
- Profile image or avatar — optional photo or AI-generated avatar you choose
4. How We Use Your Information
We use the information above to:
- Provide journaling and moon phase features
- Show lunar and sky context relevant to your location and date
- Generate reflections from your journal entries
- Support app functionality, including optional map memories and wellness context
- Manage LunarLog Plus subscriptions through Apple
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your journal entries for advertising.
5. On-Device Storage and Apple Intelligence
Journal entries, mood selections, reflection results, and most preferences are stored locally on your device using SwiftData and on-device storage.
When Apple Intelligence is available on your device, reflections may be generated on device from your journal text. Journal content is not sent to LunarLog servers for AI processing. When Apple Intelligence is unavailable, LunarLog uses a local summary instead.
6. Third-Party Services
LunarLog may communicate with the following services to provide app functionality. These services receive only the data needed for their specific purpose:
- U.S. Naval Observatory API — latitude, longitude, and date are sent to calculate moon phases and rise/set times. No account is required.
- Apple WeatherKit — optional; coordinates may be sent to Apple when the home weather card is shown. Governed by Apple's WeatherKit terms.
- Apple — processes App Store purchases, subscription management, and optional Sign in with Apple. We do not receive your full payment card details.
-
LunarLog account services (
api.bryanstober.com) — optional. If you choose Sign in with Apple, an Apple identity token is verified and your Apple user identifier is stored to support your account and optional remote moon-reminder push delivery. If you enable remote reminders, an APNs device token and app version may be sent for push registration. Email is not collected. Journal content is not uploaded. -
Premium moon assets (
bryanstober.com/images) — public manifest and texture downloads only; no user account, location, or journal data is sent.
7. HealthKit
Health data is entirely optional. If you grant HealthKit permission, LunarLog reads data such as steps, heart rate, and sleep to show optional wellness context alongside your journal entries. LunarLog does not write to HealthKit.
Health information is used only for in-app wellness context. It is not used for advertising and is not medical advice. LunarLog is not a medical device or health service.
8. Location
Location access is optional. If enabled, LunarLog uses your coordinates to calculate moon phase and rise/set times for your sky, and optionally to attach location context to journal entries and map memories. Location data is not sold or used for advertising.
9. Subscriptions
LunarLog Plus subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles payment and billing. We receive subscription status information from Apple but do not receive your full payment card details.
You can manage or cancel your subscription through Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iOS device.
10. Data Sharing
We do not sell personal data. We do not share journal entries with advertisers. Data may be shared with service providers listed above solely to operate app features you use.
11. Your Choices and Controls
You can:
- Delete journal entries within the app
- Revoke HealthKit or location permissions in iOS Settings
- Manage or cancel your LunarLog Plus subscription through Apple
- Delete your optional cloud account in Profile → Delete Account (journal entries stay on device)
- Contact us with privacy questions (see Section 14)
12. Children's Privacy
LunarLog is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last Updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of LunarLog after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
